Major Robert While, Jr. was born in Winchester, Virginia on March 9th, 1734, some 42 years before the American Revolution. He was a private in the Continental Army until receiving a serious wound in 1778, sending him home to Winchester where he began studying law with his uncle, Alexander White.

It is believed that his home, now known as Thorn Hill Manor, was built in 1787 just 4 years after the end of the American Revolutionary War.
After a stellar legal career White was appointed judge of the General Court of Virginia in 1793. He died in 1831 and by 1840 his home began to be passed down to some of the accomplished families in the area such as Joseph Turley, William Byrd and Dr. Monford D. Custer, Jr.
Today, this magnificent estate remains a fixture of Winchester’s Historic District. The 1+ acre property is adorned with lush gardens, mature boxwoods, and timeless brick-lined pathways.
Originally built in the Federal style, Thorn Hill featured a one-room-deep design, with three rooms across and two-and-a-half stories high. The intricate woodwork in the dining room, including its mantel and crown molding, is believed to have been crafted by Hessian workmen who remained in the U.S. after the Revolutionary War.

A fire in the 1850s necessitated significant rebuilding, during which the home was expanded to include two front rooms and a lengthened center hallway. The Greek Revival front door, complete with transom and sidelights, was added at this time.

The property’s most striking feature—the two-story portico with Ionic columns—was added in the 1920s by Alexander Baker, giving the manor its grand Georgian appearance.

In addition to its rich history, Thornhill Manor has been updated with modern comforts, making it a perfect blend of old-world elegance and contemporary living. Highlights include:
- 6 bedrooms, including a main-floor guest suite
- Grand dining room with a crystal chandelier
- Original mantled fireplaces and Revolution-era moldings
- Jazz-era enclosed porch, perfect for entertaining
- A picturesque property adorned with gardens, mature trees, and a 200-year-old Buckeye tree
